This compact holder allows you to add a rechargeable lithium backup battery to the Raspberry Pi 5's real-time clock (RTC) header (J5/BAT), ensuring uninterrupted timekeeping during power outages.

  • Battery Type: Supports LIR2032 rechargeable or CR2032 non-rechargeable coin cells (battery not included)
  • Connector: 2-pin SH‑1.0 mm JST plug, pre-fitted cable to fit J5 “BAT” header

Function & Performance
  • Automatic Switching: Internal power-management IC switches to backup battery when main VCC is lost, and recharges it when power resumes — charging disabled by default and must be enabled via dtoverlay=rtc-bbat-vchg in config.txt 
  • Battery Nominal Capacity:
    • LIR2032 rechargeable: ~45 mAh (Panasonic ML-series)
    • CR2032 non-rechargeable: up to ~235 mAh—but non-rechargeable and requires protective diode if charging is active 
  • Backup Duration: Estimated 6 months of RTC retention without power

  • Installation: Plug the JST connector into J5/BAT header located next to the USB-C power input on Raspberry Pi 5
  • No Configuration Required: With non-rechargeable CR2032, works instantly; rechargeable LIR2032 requires enabling the charger in config
